This song was written by Heinrich Schacht around 1855 and was later called ‘Ein stolzes Schiff’ (A Proud Ship). The melody was different then, but I just love this version.

A proud ship strokes lonely through the waves

And leads away our German brothers.

The flag is flying, the white sails face the wind

America is their destination.

Look at them standing on the deck,

Looking back one last time

At their fatherland, at the native green,

See how they move across the great ocean.

They move along on the blue waves

Why do they leave their home country?

They have been deceived for their lives,

Poverty drove them out of the fatherland.

Look up, you oppressors,

Look up, you who perpetrate the People!

See your best workforce flee,

See how they move across the great ocean.

They move along, who dares to ask them?

Why do they leave their home country?

O poor Germany, how can you bear,

That thy brothers shall be exiled in this way

What they hoped to establish here,

They will now try to find over there.

So they move away from German soil

And find their grave in America.
